What is the minimum car insurance in Florida?
Florida requires every vehicle with a current Florida registration to carry at least $10,000 in Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and $10,000 in Property Damage Liability (PDL). These are the legal minimums described by FLHSMV, and you must keep them in force continuously, even if the vehicle isn't driven.
PDL pays for damage to another person's property caused by you or someone driving your insured vehicle.
Minimums are the floor. Whether they're enough for you is a good question for an agent.

What does Florida PIP insurance pay for?
PIP covers 80 percent of necessary and reasonable medical expenses up to $10,000 from a covered injury. It pays regardless of who caused the crash. Along with $10,000 of Property Damage Liability, it's part of the minimum coverage every registered Florida vehicle must carry.
PIP is about medical expenses from a covered injury. Damage to another person's property is what PDL is for.
Ask your agent how the $10,000 limit and the 80 percent share would apply to a real bill.

Do I need insurance if my car isn't being driven?
Yes, if the car still has a current Florida registration. Florida requires continuous PIP and PDL coverage even when the vehicle isn't driven. If you want to cancel your insurance, surrender the license plate first, according to FLHSMV. Cancelling first can leave a registered car without required coverage.
Order matters: plate first, then insurance.

Quick answers
How much PIP do I need in Florida?
You need at least $10,000 of Personal Injury Protection on every vehicle with a current Florida registration. PIP covers 80 percent of necessary and reasonable medical expenses up to $10,000 from a covered injury, no matter who caused the crash. You also need $10,000 of Property Damage Liability.
Can I cancel my Florida car insurance if I'm not driving?
Not while the vehicle still has a current Florida registration. FLHSMV says coverage must stay continuous even if the vehicle is not driven. To stop coverage, surrender the plate first, then cancel the insurance. Doing it in that order keeps you within Florida's requirements.
What insurance do Florida taxis need?
Taxis need more than personal vehicles. Florida requires taxis to carry bodily injury liability of $125,000 per person and $250,000 per occurrence, plus $50,000 in Property Damage Liability, according to FLHSMV. If you drive a taxi, talk to an agent about the coverage your vehicle needs.
Does Florida PDL cover damage to my own car?
No, PDL pays for damage to another person's property caused by you or someone driving your insured vehicle. Florida requires at least $10,000 of it. Coverage for your own car is a separate question, so ask an agent what your policy includes and what it would cost.
