Florida home insurance, in plain terms
Home insurance in Florida is complicated. Here's what we can verify, and where we have to say we don't know yet.

How can I lower my Florida home insurance premium?
Start by comparing the coverage choices you control, like your hurricane deductible. Florida insurers must offer $500, 2 percent, 5 percent and 10 percent options, with some exceptions.
A higher deductible means you pay more yourself after a hurricane. Ask how each option changes both your premium and your risk.
No one can promise a specific saving. An agent can compare what's actually available for your home.

What happens if my Florida home insurer becomes insolvent?
FIGA steps in. The Florida Insurance Guaranty Association is the state-created safety net for when a licensed property and casualty insurer becomes insolvent. It takes over covered claims and issues eligible refunds. Its site, figafacts.com, explains which claims and refunds qualify and what to do next.
FIGA works with licensed property and casualty insurers that become insolvent.
If you're unsure whether your claim is covered, check FIGA's site or ask your agent.

Quick answers
Does Florida home insurance include a separate hurricane deductible?
It can. Before issuing a personal lines residential property policy, a Florida insurer must offer hurricane deductibles of $500, 2 percent, 5 percent and 10 percent of dwelling limits. If your policy has a separate hurricane deductible, it must say so on its face in bold 18-point type.
